Postpartum Relationship Tips: How to have a Baby (and a Relationship)

  • Go out for a romantic dinner…redefined. Noisy restaurants make for a soothing kind of white noise for babies. If you can, grab a booth so you have room for the baby carrier. Chances are, she’ll snooze through the whole meal.
  • A little-hyped perk of baby carriers: You can still hold hands. (Ever try to hold hands and push a stroller? No, thanks!)
  • Tell him how much the baby looks like him.
  • If you're feeling crazy (or, more important, if your post-preggers feet still fit in them), slip on a pair of heels. He’ll notice.
  • Two words: Neck massage.
  • Leave notes. Stick Post-its on the diaper pail lid, the bathroom mirror, or any other unexpected places. A simple “I love you” or “You’re a wonderful father” will make his day.
  • Establish the range of your baby monitor and then, as the baby sleeps, go set up a picnic blanket at its outer limits. This might classify as "almost getting away from it all."
  • Whoever got up early in the morning to feed the baby deserves some special treatment—like fresh coffee, lusciously buttered toast, and eggs cooked just like you (or he) likes them.
  • On a daily basis, take a minute to marvel that loving each other brought this tiny little human into the world.
