Somewhere between the first date and shopping for an engagement ring lies a land teeming with adventure, discovery, and many unanswered questions. We get it. We’ve been there.

As a pastor and counselor for over 20 years, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to meet and observe couples as they approach marriage. And while I’m a strong proponent of premarital counseling, I also understand that there are inherent obstacles.

So, it happened. You were hanging out with friends when somebody mentioned marriage. Normally, you wouldn’t mind. But inside your brain, a smaller you is screaming, because this time it came right after the words: “It seems like you’re getting pretty serious.”

Authentic Intimacy is a unique teaching ministry devoted to teaching on God’s design for intimacy and sexuality. Their vision is represented by two words that are rarely put together: sexual discipleship®.

Masturbation is a complicated issue that doesn’t lend to a clear black and white answer. I want to be realistic about the struggle without giving freedom that God perhaps hasn’t given.

That’s why I want to suggest a different question to ask—and, I think, a healthier question. Maybe even a question that Jesus would ask a man or woman seeking His wisdom on this topic. Are you ready?

Maybe you’re unsatisfied with answers the Church is giving about masturbation. But are we asking the right question?
